The best trail running shoes for wide feet
Trail running shoes for wide feet: true wide fits and roomy toe boxes, for light trails and technical ground.
Quick answer
For wide feet on light trails, our top pick is the Altra Experience Wild 3+: grips on parks, towpaths and light trail and roomy, foot-shaped toe box. For technical ground, it's the VJ Ultra 3. Fewer trail shoes come in wide fits than road shoes, so a roomy toe box is often the better route.

Wide fit or roomy toe box?
A wide fit is a separate version of the shoe, cut wider through the whole foot. In trail shoes, HOKA, Brooks, New Balance and Saucony offer the most.
A roomy toe box keeps a standard heel but gives your toes space to spread. Altra builds every shoe this way, and some Inov-8 models use a similar foot shape. It suits a wide forefoot with a normal heel.
Why width matters more on trails
On rough ground your toes spread to help you balance, and on long descents your foot slides forward. A cramped toe box turns both into blisters and bruised toenails.
Don't go too loose, though. A trail shoe still needs to hold your heel and midfoot firmly, or your foot will slide around on uneven ground.
Frequently asked questions
Which trail running shoes come in wide fits?
HOKA, Brooks, New Balance and Saucony offer wide versions of several trail shoes. Altra makes every trail shoe with a roomy toe box.
Should I size up in trail shoes for wide feet?
Going up a size adds length, not width, and a long shoe can catch on roots. Try a wide fit or a roomy toe box first.
Do feet swell on long trail runs?
Yes, especially in heat and on runs of several hours. That's another reason to leave a little room at the front.
How we picked
Every shoe we track is scored on cushioning, stability, responsiveness, weight, drop, plate, width options and price. For this guide we ran that scoring for a typical runner with these needs and show the top three. No brand or retailer can pay to appear. How we rank.
